About the Government of Norfolk Island
The Government of Norfolk Island emerged from a community-led process reflecting long-standing discussions about local representation, cultural identity, and the right of Norfolk Island people to shape their own future.
Following the removal of Norfolk Island's previous self-governing arrangements in 2015, many residents continued to engage in dialogue about governance, community voice, and self-determination. This led to the formation of the Council of Elders and the Visions Assembly, and ultimately to the community election held on 1 January 2026.
That election was not party-based and did not involve campaigning in the conventional sense. Instead, it was designed as a voluntary process focused on representation, participation, and community mandate.

Acknowledging the Journey
The Government of Norfolk Island was formed following a period of sustained community engagement and organisation, led by the Visions Assembly with the endorsement of the Council of Elders.
This work supported a community-led election held on 1 January 2026, which was conducted in a professional and orderly manner and saw strong participation by eligible voters across the island.
The Government acknowledges the commitment, time, and goodwill shown by all those involved, and thanks the people of Norfolk Island for engaging in this important moment in the island's history.
To ensure transparency and preserve the record of how this point was reached, the material developed during that period has been archived.
A Note on Transparency
